Thermal

The objective of this course is to impart on the participants an understanding of the calculation of thermal and coupled thermal-mechanical problems using LS-DYNA. Topics dealt with in the seminar include modeling of the basic forms of heat transfer. The emphasis within this context is on thermal contact in LS-DYNA.

Content:

  • Introduction and basics of thermal simulations
  • Time step control
    • select time step size
    • fully implicit vs. Crank Nicolson
  • Boundary conditions
    • temperature, flux, convection and radiation
    • hand calculated convection heat transfer coefficient
  • Nonlinear problems
    • solving a solid-liquid phase transition problem
  • Equation solvers in LS-DYNA
    • Gauss direct
    • conjugate gradient iterative solvers
  • Thermal contact for shells and thick shells
  • Thermal-stress and thermal-fluid coupling
  • Thermal modeling for special applications
    • cooling of tools
    • welding
