4a-Impetus

One of the core objectives of any F&E activity is to reduce development time and cost. In the field of plastics technology in particular, more demanding specifications in various applications result in an ever-growing diversity of material types. This makes it virtually impossible to create a quick and flexible access to reliable material parameters that are crucial to carry out virtual simulation exercises. For the first time, 4a Impetus offers an end-to-end path to generate validated material cards from samples manufactured under real-life conditions subjected to load patterns close to reality, using numerical methods. Using the stored database, input decks (material cards) are automatically created for FE-solvers such as LS-DYNA. LS-OPT is used to automatically compare the simulation to the test applying the least-squares method. Material parameters are identified by minimising the errors between test and simulation curves. The 4a Impetus pendulum test system can be easily put on a desk in order to be used directly at the development department. The double-pendulum design enables test velocities of up to 10 m/s, with the system working virtually pulse-free towards the “outside”. The system has been designed to test a great variety of materials, including elastomers, reinforced and non-reinforced thermoplastics, foams, thermosetting plastics and fibrous composite materials, using most diverse sample configurations.

Content:

  • Introduction to the test system (underlying rationale, measuring equipment, practical testing, samples)
  • Methods used (identification of material parameters using LS-OPT, evaluation of Meta-Models using neural networks and LS-OPT)
  • Examples of applications for
    - Foamed materials
    - Compact thermoplastics and
    - Elastomers.

This information day will provide you with a better understanding of how the test system works, and give you the opportunity to discuss aspects of dynamic material characterisation with experts and other attendees. The event will include measurements to be carried out at prepared samples. In addition, these tests will be used to generate material cards for LS-DYNA.

This information day will be held in collaboration with our partner, 4a Engineering GmbH.
