THUMS Human Models

The THUMS (Total HUman Model for Safety) models represent a numerical image of the human body for the application in various areas.

The Total Human Model for Safety (THUMSTM) is a finite element simulation model of the human body and is primarily used to analyze the kinematical behavior and possible injuries of the bony structure, the head, or the internal organs in various impact situations. Other applications may include the area of seating comfort or sport-medical investigations. The direct modelling of the geometry and the material behavior of the human body allows in addition to conventional dummy models a deeper analysis of collision-specific injuries.

The THUMS models are developed by Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Central R&D Labs since the year 2000.

Model Versions and Variants

Currently, the following model variants are available

  • THUMS Version 4 – detailed, passive model for highly dynamic crash load cases and injury evaluations
    • AM50, AM95, AF05, 10YO, 6YO and 3YO, occupant and pedestrian models
  • THUMS Version 5 – coarser model including active muscle modelling to reflect the kinematical behavior in crash and pre-crash scenarios
    • AM50, AM95, AF05 occupant models
  • THUMS Version 6 – detailed model including active muscle modelling for crash- and pre-crash-scenarios and injury evaluations
    • AM50, AM95, AF05 occupant models

Since end of January 2021 Toyota published the models under a royalty-free open-source license and DYNAmore discontinued the distribution and support of the models. Instead, the models can directly be accessed on the Toyota website.

THUMS Injury Risk Visualization Tool

In March 2021, JSOL published an injury risk evaluation tool for postprocessing the THUMS human model simulation results. The idea is to simplify the THUMS injury risk evaluation for all users, especially considering the bony structure and the head and brain complex. The used injury criteria are based on recent publications.

The tool consists of a command line interface to extract the relevant results from the LS-Dyna result files and a web interface to visualize the injury risk curves.
