Towards Zero Failure Production Methods by Advanced Modeling Techniques and a Process Integrated Virtual Control

The use of numerical simulation techniques in the design of manufacturing processes has experienced a rapidly growing acceptance in industry during the past decades. The application of computational methods remains however still very limited in the later tryout and production stages of the development process. This is primarily due to the fact that the currently applied simulation techniques still base on significant simplifications of the real manufacturing systems.

Extending the application of simulation techniques to the later stages of the development process is a challenging task and requires substantial improvement of the currently used models. Even small modifications made on the active tool surfaces during tryout are known to have a great impact on the quality and robustness of the process. A very accurate description of the contact condition between the tools and the blank, including the elastic behavior of the tools, is thus necessary. Furthermore the temperature dependent behavior of the blank materials as well as of lubricants needs to be accurately modeled in order to approximate the real production conditions.

Another exciting new research area is the improvement of process robustness during production through the use of adaptive control systems. Inline, non-destructive measurement systems can be combined to specially devised control algorithms to detect and avoid failure during production. In addition to FEM based methods, more computationally efficient approaches based on metamodels, are presently being investigated. The accurate modeling of the real production conditions is also decisive for the successful implementation of such systems.
The mentioned requirements in the fields of tryout and of adaptive process control put us in front of brand new challenges. The classical research fields in deep drawing such as material modeling and parameter identification, numerical methods for the optimization and robustness analysis, still constitute the core topics of the IDDRG conference and will be treated thoroughly.

The IDDRG 2013 aims to offer the international community an open platform for discussing the new challenges in the field of sheet metal forming, following the tradition of earlier IDDRG conferences.
